The Big Picture - Rethinking Dyslexia
Cathy McMillan & Cheryl Hoffman
How can we, as K-3 educators, weave social-emotional well-being, resilience, and self-awareness into the very fabric of our teaching and learning spaces? How can children’s literature thread together our exploration of self, other, and all of creation in non-threatening, low-risk, yet practical ways that meet the needs of all learners? Using an inclusive approach that blends sustainable pedagogy, the seven sacred teachings, Indigenous ways of knowing (maybe even the seven limbs of Patanjali’s yoga!), this full-day workshop promises conversation, experiential learning through doing, and reflection forging the link between our own personal well-being and that of our students. While various texts will be used throughout the workshop (with relevant links provided for ongoing use), our guiding text will be I am One by Susan Verde and Peter Reynolds, reminding us, as educators that we can indeed make a difference in the lives of our students. Participants will receive all necessary materials in advance and are asked to come prepared with colouring utensils, imagination, and willingness to have fun!
